Well, if you belong to traffic exchanges, most of them have downline builders, right? So, even if you don’t belong to a dedicated downline builder, you’ll still need your usernames and affiliate links at some point and it’s great to have that information at your fingertips. My solution is to build a table in Word or any other word processor with table-making capability. You need only two columns. The first column is for the program or traffic exchange’s name, and the second is for the affiliate URL. I also list my banners in their respective blocks. However, when adding a banner, I color it blue. You can color it magenta. It doesn’t matter. Just so it sticks out as being different from the affiliate links. Other URLs I might add for the same program might be shortcuts, as with TinyURL. Or tracking links, as with LinkBrander. And, I color them differently, too. You’ll be amazed at how big a difference coloring links is. It will save you lots of time in the long run. You won’t have to read the whole URL to see what it relates to, only choose the right color. Beside these URLs, I often add descriptions. For instance, I belong to Marlon Sanders’ affiliate program, and he has umpteen products to sell. So, next to each of my affiliate URLs, I describe the product it relates to with a short keyword or two in parentheses. You can type all of this information into your table in any order. When you’ve finished, click on the first column and then go to “Table” in the top toolbar and then, “Sort.” Your programs and respective URLs will then be in alphabetical order, making finding your URLs very easy. After your table is complete and sorted, save your document. Then, go to your Start menu, click the icon for My Documents and navigate to your table. Drag the icon for it to your desktop. This is a little gem that I want to share. Article Marketing was a big talk a year or so ago and the buzz has died out. But, it is still a killer way to market your business. Just think: currently there are thousands upon thousands of article directories on the web. Each of these directories stores hundreds upon thousands (and sometimes millions) of articles covering everything to the best way to run a bed and breakfast to the latest practices in the accounting world. When visiting one of these sites, a visitor can simply choose whatever category they please and pull up thousands of articles on that topic. Why should you care? Because since search engines like Google love article directories, if you write a keyword dense article, you have a strong chance of boosting your organic ranking on Google. Organic listings are the non-paid for results that show up after a Google search. These hold lots of value and have a high click through rate, ideal for lead generation. So how do you do it? First pick a topic that shows off your professional expertise and is directly related to your business. Again, taking the example of the owner of the bed and breakfast, write a tips article about “10 Tips to Attracting Guests” or an informative article about the latest trends in the industry. Then, write a 400-600 word article covering this topic. This is the perfect word count for pick up, but I would suggest leaning slightly toward the higher number. And here’s why. You need to pack your article with the keywords that your business is associated with. If you have a keyword list of 5 words, make sure that those keywords appear as many times as you can in the article without being too obvious. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy – your bio! Depending on the article, you could use your landing page incentive in your bio. Your bio should be no more than 3-4 sentences (remember, short attention spans) with 2-3 sentences building your credibility and introducing your business. Then use the final sentence to introduce your incentive and drive leads to your landing page. For example: “Go to http://www.delicioustreat.com today and receive your free Ebook, “20 Dessert Recipes Under 10 Minutes”. This will get people to your landing page or website where they will convert into a lead! So now you have the article…what do you do? Market it! Widely distribute the article to: Article Banks Your email database Post it on your website Post it on your blog Social Media Sites (Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook) Submit it to blogs Promote it on message boards and discussion groups The sky is the limit. Think your article is really a hit machine? Then even try distributing it to sites such as PR Web and PR Newswire (which widely distribute your article to media all over). These are pay services, but worth a shot if you have excellent material. Distributing articles and sharing useful information is the new currency that the internet works on, so by having a few up your sleeve you will be able to drive traffic to your site, build your credibility and create more interest. Short URLs: The Pros And Cons. Should You Be Using Short URLs On Twitter, Facebook, And The Web?

What are Short URLs and should you be using them? This is a topic that I have seen quite a bit of discussion recently on Facebook so I thought that I would address this question in this article. Some explanation first. Short URLs are long URLs that have been shortened to make them fit more easily in a text message, Facebook update, or Tweet. In and of themselves there is nothing wrong with Short URLs, but you should consider the Pros and Cons before using them. There are lots of reasons why you may want or need to use a shortened URL. If you do a lot of Tweets on Twitter you will almost need to use Short URLs if you refer to web sites, recently Twitter initiated an auto URL shortening function on their site. The reason is due to Twitter’s limitation of 140 characters for a Tweet, basically what you would have available if you were using a cel phone for texting. So, if you want to put in a URL to a web page and include a bit of explanation you can easily go over that 140 characters. This is where shortening a URL is handy, it gives you more room for comment. Also some longer URLs are more than 140 characters in length, especially URLs from sites using Dynamic content to build pages, such as shopping sites and news services. Fortunately Twitter has information and links to URL shortening services to help you do this (more on these services later). Here is an example of a URL that benefits from being shortened. This is a link to one of my training titles on Amazon, in this case my SEO (Search Engine Optimization) training title: amazon.com/SEO-Optimization-Training-Lessons-Tutorials/dp/B004UXOE7I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1308018376&sr=8-3 This whole thing is the direct URL to the sales page on Amazon. The URL is 120 characters in length, leaving you with only 20 characters for comment if you are using Twitter and even if you aren’t it leaves you with a very hard to remember URL. Here is the same URL shortened using a Short URL service on the web: tinyurl.com/HTG-SEO This URL was shortened using a free service at http://tinyurl.com. The HTG-SEO is a custom shortcut name that I selected, as long as no one else is using it you can choose any shortcut that you want. This URL is now only 26 characters long. Another reason you may want to shorten a URL is to make it more user friendly and rememberable. Notice in the examples above how much easier it is to remember the shortened URL instead of the long one from Amazon. So, two very good reasons to use a URL shortening service, now lets take a look at some of the downsides. You need to weigh the pros and cons and consider your audience before you use a shortened URL. The biggest downside to URL shortening services is that you are no longer showing the actual URL. For instance in the examples above the first long URL is obviously going to http://Amazon.com, but in the second shortened URL it is not clear where the URL is pointing to. This can lead to concerns with your audience since they can not immediately tell where the link is pointing. It could be pointing to Amazon as you claim, or it could be pointing to a malicious web site instead. This is why I recommend against clicking on shortened URLs from people or sites you don’t know, it is a security risk. If your audience is unsure of who you are you may lose clicks using a shortened URL. Another drawback is the lack of name recognition. If I directed my buyers to my home web site instead of Amazon I could use a much shorter URL naturally and keep my web site name visible at the same time. For instance here is a link to the same title sold on my web site: howtogurus.com/SEO.htm This is a nice, short URL that also contains the name of my main web site, much better than using a URL shortening service. But what if you needed to sell an Amazon title or some other title with the same problem. Then a great solution is to set up an affiliate web site for your sales, with pages on your site drawn from the Amazon or other affiliate service. So your URL could look like the one above, which you would use in your advertising, and the links on the pages on your site would use the long URLs (such as the Amazon example above). So, now for my recommendations: • If your audience knows you then go ahead and use shortened URLs if needed • If you want the name recognition then try to set up relatively short URLs on your own site • You may need to use shortened URLs if you use a service like Twitter • If your audience does not know you but you still need shortened URLs, again you should try to set it up through your own site • And finally, if your audience does not know you and you can’t use your own web site then you can try using a service like http://tinyurl.com which has a preview feature, allowing your viewers to see the page before they go to it To find services that create short URLs do a search on Google for “short URL”, you will find several free services that do a great job.
